Memory foam matress toppers are mats placed on top of the mattress to adjust its firmness or softness. They may either be 2” to 4” in thickness and are made of memory foam.

What Is "Memory Foam"?

A memory foam is also known as the visco-elastic memory foam. It is different from the ordinary foams which are made up of sealed pockets of air. Lying down on ordinary foam is not as relaxing and comfortable as sleeping on memory foam. The sealed pockets of air present in standard foams applies the same pressure as that of the weight of the body lying on it, hence the sleeper wakes up feeling more tensed and sore. Memory foams are made up of open cells that follow the body’s contours and shapes lessening pressure points allowing for better quality sleep.

To better appreciate memory foam mattress toppers, one must understand the technology behind the product. Memory foams or visco-elastic foams were initially designed by NASA engineers for astronauts who experienced body pains while in high altitudes. Memory foams allow distribution of air around the surrounding pockets where the body lies on, cradling the sleeper in the right places. Such a sleeping environment lets the body muscles relax , resulting to a full, unencumbered rest.

Another feature of memory foam that makes it an ideal material for mattress toppers is its ability to regulate temperature while the body is at rest. It is temperature-sensitive. It softens up as it adjusts to body heat and bounces back to its firmness when there is no weight applied to it. The material’s firmness is maintained and makes this type of topper less prone to sagging.

Memory foam mattress toppers are best under the following conditions:

  • If you wake up feeling sore . This means that your normal sleeping position is not properly supported by the mattress you are lying on. Memory foam mattress toppers act to buttress some of the pressure applied by your body weight upon the mattress

  • If you experience back or joint pains upon waking up. It must be that the mattress is too firm that your muscles tend to become more tensed while there is pressure building up against your body. Or it could also be that the mattress is too soft that your body’s weight gets buried too deep into the mattress causing soreness along the joints.

  • If you observe you are constantly tossing and turning during sleep and wake up feeling more tired than rested. The tossing and turning might be caused by the feeling of being uncomfortable from a hard or too-firm mattress. Sleeping on one side during sleep may result to a feeling of tightness or soreness on one hip side if the mattress is too firm, hence the need to turn to the other side. Memory foam mattress toppers provide just the right kind of reinforcement to the body, even when it is lying on just one side for a full night’s sleep.

Memory foam mattress toppers are not recommended when:

  • If your bed’s mattress is too soft, memory foam toppers cannot make them any firmer.

  • If your bed has bumps or dips in it, memory foam mattress toppers will not hide or provide support for these deficiencies. It’s probably best to replace your worn out mattress.
